Train here, explore there! That's the tagline for GadRock, a new micro gym located on beautiful Lake Gadsden just a couple of miles from downtown. Open now, this facility offers indoor climbing, with an incredible view I might add, but they also offer so much more.
The day I visited I was met at the door by one of the owners and founders, Carrie Machen, an avid climber, and Gadsden native. She and co-owner, Kate Wilson, came up with the idea when they were both working at Back Forty Beer Company, another fantastic addition to the Greater Gadsden area.
Although the building has a small footprint, these two pack a maximum amount of fun into that space. After all, this kind of fun goes straight up. Up to 40 feet straight up. And man, what a view!
Carrie takes me into the main climbing area featuring multiple routes for all skill levels. Each route has a "hold" color to avoid confusion as you climb. A setter makes new routes every two to three weeks to keep climbers challenged.
There is also a dedicated bouldering area. Bouldering is climbing without ropes. The Greater Gadsden area is lucky to have Hospital Boulders which attracts bouldering competitions and climbers from all over the country. If you'd like to read more about the bouldering competition held by the Southeast Climbers, The Sickness Comp at Hospital Boulders, click here.
No climbing experience? No problem! Special harnesses will allow you to try it out with no fear of falling. GadRock will also be offering classes if you'd like to learn more about the sport and take your skills outdoors.
Next up, the boardroom. This multi-purpose space houses paddle boards and life jackets, in addition to offering seating for meetings, birthday parties, classes, and more. The duo also plans to offer fitness classes.
Large glass garage-style doors are all that separate the indoor space from the outdoors. Step onto the dock where the SUP tours happen. Offering eco-tours, introductory classes, and even yoga, there's something for everyone at GadRock.
So, what are you waiting for? Try something new! For hours, pricing, and more information about GadRock click here.
And remember, wherever you live or wherever you are, be a tourist in your own town!
